Maybe McKinney felt that he wouldn't get as big of an audience as he would with "standard" AD&D. The ritualistic sorcery system of Carcosa is one of its greatest strengths. All I can say it was brilliantly handled by the GM. I treasure my Carcosa character because he had to scrap for every XP to get to second level.
